What is Intertextuality?

Intertextuality occurs when the conventions of a genre are added to other ones, or when a specific cultural reference is made in a media text. Extras is a TV show that uses intertextuality through celebrity cameos and references to other films and TV shows.

Examples of Intertextuality in TV and Film

In Family guy when they made a version of Star Wars which the whole episode is based completely around intertextuality where you may no get references or scenes in the episode unless you had watched Star Wars. This episode is classed as parody of the Star Wars Films.

In the new Jurassic World, intertextuality is used within as they reference the previous films, which is self advertisement to get people aware of their previous films and for something for the audience that have seen the these films. There, the actors stumble across props e.g. the car and stages in previous films.

Why is Intertextuality used and why it might appeal to an audience?

The intertextual references create pleasure for the audience. Additionally, the videos may use many conventions form Sci-Fi which would appeal to fans of the Sci-Fi genre.

Repetition of familiar conventions engages the audience.

Personally Im thinking of using some conventions from the Hip-Hop genre.
